چکیده

Juvenile hormone (JH) affects multiple physiological traits in insects. In social insects, besides development, JH has been demonstrated to influence caste determination and the production of chemical compounds. wasps, triggers behavioral maturation, gonadotropic effects, hydrocarbon modulation. Here, we investigated whether displays same function fertility cue females German wasp Vespula germanica , previously shown related species vulgaris. By experimentally treating workers with JH-analog, an anti-JH, acetone solvent control, tested modulates cuticular expression (CHCs), Dufour’ s gland composition, hence compounds found over egg’s surface. Additionally, explored a effect on workers. Workers treated JH-analog acquired profile that was intermediate between queen other Interestingly, pattern also seen glands eggs, although more subtle. Furthermore, were fertile when compared controls, supporting fact acts as hormone. Our results indicate similar societies V. V . vulgaris

Worker policing in the German wasp Vespula germanica

In some ants, bees, and wasps, workers kill or ‘‘police’’ male eggs laid by other workers in order to maintain the reproductive primacy of the queen. Kin selection theory predicts that multiple mating by the queen is one factor that can selectively favor worker policing. This is because when the queen is mated to multiple males, workers are more closely related to the queen’s sons than to the s...

Reproduction and recruitment in perennial colonies of the introduced wasp Vespula germanica.

We investigated the genetic structure of perennial colonies of the yellowjacket wasp (Vespula germanica) in its introduced range in Australia and New Zealand. The nuclear genotypes of 712 gynes from 21 colonies, 147 workers from 5 colonies, and 81 males from 4 colonies were assayed at three polymorphic microsatellite loci. The mitochondrial haplotypes of all wasps also were determined for a 450...

Temporal Polyethism and Worker Specialization in the Wasp, Vespula germanica

Temporal polyethism is a common mechanism of worker specialization observed in social insect species with large colony sizes, Vespula wasp colonies consist of thousands of monomorphic workers, yet studies based on small cohorts of workers report that temporal polyethism is either weak or completely absent in different Vespula species. Concerned that the small sample size of these studies preclu...

Juvenile Hormone Titer Versus Juvenile Hormone Synthesis in Female Nymphs and Adults of the German Cockroach, Blattella germanica

Abstract Patterns of juvenile hormone have been intensively studied in the cockroach Blattella germanica under different physiological situations. However, data have been mainly obtained in vitro, and refer to hormone synthesized by isolated corpora allata, whereas information available on hormone concentration in the hemolymph is restricted to adult females. In order to complement our studies ...

Juvenile hormone, reproduction, and worker behavior in the neotropical social wasp Polistes canadensis.

Previous studies of the division of labor in colonies of eusocial Hymenoptera (wasps and bees) have led to two hypotheses regarding the evolution of juvenile hormone (JH) involvement. The novel- or single-function hypothesis proposes that the role of JH has changed from an exclusively reproductive function in primitively eusocial species (those lacking morphologically distinct queen and worker ...
